“We all got a three-day leave,” recounted Charlotte, who was discharged in October 1945. She met her future husband, James Sanddal while they were both serving at Norman. A memorial service will be held this spring, once the wonderful flowing water, flowers and grasses return to the Montana mountains Charlotte loved so much. It seemed that Sands’ Boston Calling performance was destined to work out regardless of the roadblocks she faced on the way there. Just minutes after her set concluded and the crowd dispersed, a severe weather warning led to the evacuation of the Harvard Athletic Complex along with a three hour delay. As her set continued, audience engagement only intensified in a testament to Sands’s impressive songwriting and vibrant onstage presence. Aside from a few hardcore fans who came equipped with signs and memorized lyrics, many in the audience were new to Sands’ music. However, the artist proved her musical prowess to new and old fans alike as she won the crowd over.

Charlotte set records in multiple swim events over 30 years, including at least three national/international swim records in the 100–105-year-old age category just last year. The Ridley members are a right group and really became Charlotte’s second family. After a long and healthy life, a series of health setbacks afflicted Charlotte in her last year and meant the heartbreaking end of her swim career. But she continued to cheer on her teammates, and they have been a constant source of support and comfort to her.
